Mohs Surgical Procedures
Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized, highly effective technique for the removal of skin cancer. Mohs surgery differs from other skin cancer treatments in that it permits the immediate and complete microscopic examination and the removal of cancerous tissue, so that the cancer can be eliminated. Because of this specialized method in which tissue is removed and examined, Mohs surgery has been recognized as the skin cancer treatment with the highest cure rate.
During Mohs surgery, the dermatologic surgeon removes a thin layer of skin containing the cancerous cells and examines it microscopically. The process is repeated until all skin margins are found to be free of cancer cells. The advantages of Mohs surgery are a high cure rate, tissue sparing, and immediate certainty of negative margins.
